QUESTIONS:
1. What is principle 5?
2. Slide 2 (Excerpt from 1.1.6 purport):
a. What are the three points Nilacala, Jade, and I understood from this slide?
N: By repeating what we hear in our words we can assimilate the knowledge, we’ll
remember it and be able to use it.
J: this hearing and repeating are two of the 9 processes of bhakti: sravanam kirtanam
C: “are of primary importance to progressive spiritual life”: this hearing and repeating is
foundation of all our other devotional practises
b. Do you understand anything different or additional?
c. Does SB 2.2.30 support this excerpt? If so, how?
3. What does SP say in slide 3 (lecture on BG 2.55-56). Put it in your own words.
4. Regarding slide 4 (lecture ’75): What was Nilacala’s understanding? What did I add?
Do you have any different or additional understanding?
N: We have to first understand what SP is saying and then repeat it without adding anything
to it. To demonstrate we’ve understood we have to explain it.
C: we have to keep to SP’s meaning but demonstrate we’ve understood his meaning.
The danger of just repeating his words is we will just be saying cliches, we’ll become a slogan
religion.
5. What is the benefit when we repeat back what our discussion partner is saying?
Helps our partner to clarify their thoughts
6. What often happens when devotees give class?
in class we don’t repeat SP’s meaning, we make our own comments instead. Have
you noticed this?
7. Should we criticize others for how they give class? What should we do?
No. We are meant to be respectful, humble, gentle. Be the change. Some tips
8. Slide 5 (2 different quotes): What did Jade understand? What did Nilacala
understand? What did I add? Do you have any additional or different understanding?
Jade: By reading SP’ books we will be able to preach more authoritatively.
N: When giving class we should repeat what SP is saying in the purport…don’t go to other
subjects
C: SP is explaining how I can grasp meaning like a parrot, and not just repeat words I don’t
understand. We should practise this when in association of informed devotees so we
practice preaching to those who are uninformed.
